39 - COMM 111: Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

(READ this section CAREFULLY)

For your own learning and progress as a speaker and student, it is necessary for you to attend class.

  • A strict attendance policy is in effect. If you are not in class you are absent.

  • Attendance is extremely important.

  • This is a participation class. It is impossible to participate if you are not in class.

  • This is also a supportive class. You need to support your peers on their endeavors as speakers as they will support you.

  • Excessive tardiness will affect your grade.

Attendance is important and required.  Either you are in class or you are not.  I encourage you not to miss any classes.  Speech and quiz days are critical.  In general, speeches and quizzes cannot be made up.  If an emergency should occur on your assigned speech day or a test day, you must CALL ME (502-852-6976) WITHIN 12 HOURS of the absence and l or office).  I will NOT accept e-mail as communication in these situations.  I will then determine if the speech or test can be made up.  You will also need documentation of the absence (doctor’s note, accident report, etc.).  Also keep in mind if you miss an activity for that particular class, you miss out on those points.  Activity points cannot be made up.

  • For those students who have had 0 absences, you will be awarded an extra 5 points at the end of the semester. (This may not seem like much, but with +/- grading system, it can make a big difference in your grade.)

  • Just “because you aren’t ready or haven’t prepared fully” are “NOT viable reasons to not present your speech on your assigned day.

  • Final decisions pertaining to this course will be at the discretion and convenience of the individual instructor.

******Due to the participatory nature of this Communication 111 class the attendance policy is as follows:

Summer Classes

  • The five (5) week courses allows two (2) absences .The third (3rd) absence will result in your final grade being lowered by one letter grade (which will be 100 points or the equivalent to 10% of the total possible points for the course).
The fourth (4th) absence will result in your final grade being lowered by an additional letter grade (which will now be a total of 200 points or the equivalent to 20% of the total possible points for the course).
On your fifth (5th) day of absence you will fail the course.
