43 - COMM 111: Speech #1 Worksheet

Introductory

Think about these things when working on Speech #1.

  1. What is my goal/outcome/purpose I want to achieve in this speech?

  2. What 3–5 main points, objects, ideas, characteristics, etc., do you want to use to convey your purpose to your listeners in this speech? What do these represent in your life? How are they suited for your purpose in this speech and the audience/situational aspects of the speech? For any use of a visual aid, such as the three objects, think: Is each object large enough for the class to see without passing it around? If it is not, plan another way to represent the concept(s) so that the class can see it (make a poster, or choose another, larger object).

  3. For other topics allowed by your instructor, ask yourself:How will I make my topic relevant to this particular audience? (The WIIFM aspect.)
What type of stories and support will I use to explain my topic?
What pattern of organization will be the best for conveying my message effectively?

  4. You will be required to create a full sentence preparation outline for all your speeches.Your professor may provide you with any specific personal outline guidelines and offer examples of outlines previously presented in class.
You may also consult your text for guidance on the correct outline.

  5. You will also create a brief set of key word speaking notes to use while you speak.

Please note: These two types of outlines will be used throughout class and your speaking career. They are separate documents with different purposes: one is “before you speak” (to prepare) and the other is “as you speak.”

Think about these questions:

  • How does my purpose meet the assignment? Explain.

  • How have I shown my credibility on this topic?

  • How do you plan to make this topic relevant to your audience? Keep their focus.

  • How does my topic affect my audience/listeners?

  • How am I going to meet the WIIFM (What’s In It For Me?) of my audience?

  • What type of evidence and supporting materials am I going to incorporate in my speech?

  • Which pattern of organization will be most effective for my main points? Why?

  • How will I begin and end my speech?
