Think about these items when working on speech #3:

  • Are you addressing a claim of fact or value? And why?

Here are some examples of Specific/Rhetorical Purposes

Topic- Claim of Fact or Value? - Organizational Pattern

  • Today I want to show you how global warming is caused by humans. - Fact - Topical/Categorical

  • Today I am going to show you evidence that current diet fads may be harmful to your health. - Value - Topical/Categorical

Please watch the connotations of using the words “to persuade” early on in your speech. They may set up barriers with your auidence for the success of your intent.


Remember: You may incorporate your goal/outcome in your central idea/thesis sentence.


Think about these questions when working on speech #3.

  • How does my purpose meet the persuasive assignment? (Fact or Value) Explain.

  • What are your emotional appeals?

  • What is your credibility on the topic? Why are you talking about this with us?

  • How and when will I cite my sources out loud in the speech?

  • How is your topic relevant to your audience? How do you plan to make it relevant?

  • How do I meet the WIIFM of my audience?

  • How does my topic affect my audience?

  • What type of evidence and supporting materials am I going to incorporate in my speech?

  • Which pattern of organization will be most effective for my main points? Why?

  • How will I begin and end my speech?

  • Thinking about your audio/visual aid, is it a poster/tangible item/PowerPoint? What idea or evidence does it extend or explain? How have you integrated it within your speech for full effect?
