Claim of Policy

Think of these examples when working on speech #4.

Here is an example:

Topic - Claim of Policy

  • People who want to lose weight should try the all-fruit diet. - “should” — adresses whether a course of action should be taken

  • Flip side: People who want to lose weight should not use the all-fruit diet because it is harmful to your health. - “should not” — addresses whether a course of action should not be taken

Try this with your topic.


Please watch the connotations of usign the words “to persuade” early on in your speech. They may set up barriers with your audience for teh success of your goal/intent.


Think about these questions when working on speech #4:

  • How does my purpose meet the persuasive assignment? (Policy) Explain.

  • What is your credibility on the topic? Why are you talking about this with us?

  • How and when will I cite my sources out loud in the speech?

  • What are your emotional appeals?

  • How is your topic relevant to your audience? How do you plan to make it relevant?

  • How do I meet the WIIFM of my audience?

  • How does my topic affect my audience/listeners?

  • What type of evidence and supporting materials am I going to incorporate in my speech?

  • Which pattern of organization will be most effective for my main points? Why?

  • How will I begin and end my speech?

  • What is the course of action provided and how will your audience follow through?

  • Think about your visual aid:How does it extend or explain the point it is referencing?
    Will you use other presentational aids in addition to your PowerPoint? Which ones and how do they support your presentation?

  • Think about your references. You need three!
